Paul
W. Hiss, M.D., heading the staff of AVLC, has performed over
24,000
vision correcting procedures including more than 7,000 LASIK surgeries.
The combination of 18 years experience with precision quality work
is what makes the difference in the level of patients' satisfaction
with Dr. Hiss and the AVLC staff. The entire staff of Advanced Vision
& Laser Center understands that when it comes to your eyes,
safety, experience, and value outweigh cost. "Because our Center
does nothing but refractive surgeries, including LASIK, PRK,
and Clear Lens Extraction (CLE), we
are positioned to offer each patient a valuable choice", explains
Dr. Hiss.
Laser Vision Correction freedom to live an active
lifestyle hassle free
Many active northern Nevadans enjoy year-round recreational opportunities
in one of nature's most beautiful settings. But the pursuit of the
healthy, active lifestyle can be a challenge for those who must
wear eyeglasses or contact lenses.
If you're involved with athletics, precise vision is critical to
performance. If your field is entertainment, sales, or public relations,
appearance can enhance your marketability. Even if you just want
the simple pleasure of getting up in the morning without fumbling
for eyewear before you can see the world, LASIK surgery can more
clearly define your field of vision.
LASIK is a procedure whereby a beam of cool excimer laser light
subtly alters the shape of the cornea. The pulsating beam, controlled
by a computer programmed with exacting data based on the patient's
eye measurements, reshapes the cornea so that images projected onto
the inner eye are more clearly defined. The procedure is performed
on an outpatient basis under the guidance of the surgeon's skillful
hand and usually takes about 15 minutes. Good functional vision
generally recurs within 12 hours. Most patients report minimal or
no discomfort during either the procedure or the recovery period.
After recovery, most patients report little or no need for glasses
or contact lenses for distance vision.
Advanced Technology and Proven Experience
The first fixed-site VISX laser center in northern Nevada.
Advanced Vision & Laser Center in Sparks was built in the fall
of 1999 as the permanent site of the state-of-the-art VISX Star S4
Custom View Laser, one of the most advanced excimer lasers available.
The laser at Advanced Vision & Laser Center was the first fixed-site
VISX laser in northern Nevada, and Paul W. Hiss, M.D. was the first
surgeon in northern Nevada to perform laser vision correction.
Dr. Hiss is the director of Eye Care Associates of Nevada and associate
clinical professor at the School of Medicine at the University of
Nevada. He has performed more then 7,000 LASIK surgeries. Dr. Hiss
was the first in northern Nevada to provide patients with Lasik
surgery, PRK, no stitch and bifocal cataract surgery.
He lectures on these topics frequently to physicians from across
the United States.
Attention to Detail ensuring reliability and the
finest patient care
"Patients have put up with glasses or contacts long enough,"
says Dr. Hiss. With that in mind, Advanced Vision & Laser Center
was built with patient care and the stringent specifications of
its new VISX laser in mind.
AVLC was the distinguished for its state-of-the-art operating room,
designed to maintain a steady temperature and humidity level for
ensuring optimal surgical procedures. "It is truly an environmentally
friendly alternative for the patient and for the surgeon. AVLC is
also the first to offer a fixed-site VISXTM laser in the northern
Nevada area," states Dr. Hiss.
Douglas Devries, O.D.
Dr. Douglas Devries is one of the most experienced optometrists
in the western United States in the pre and post-operative management
of LASIK patients. He has practiced with ophthalmic surgeons for
twelve years and has had the LASIK procedure performed on his own
eyes by Dr. Hiss.
While attending Pacific University College of Optometry, Dr. Devries
was an Academic All American and was recognized in 'Who's Who In
American College and Universities', and 'Outstanding Young Men In
America'. He received the Beta Sigma Kappa Silver Medal and Pacific
University President's Award for graduating first in his class.
He received nine additional awards for clinical, academic and research
achievements.
Dr. Devries is board certified in the treatment and management
of ocular disease by the Nevada State Board of Optometry. He has
served as president of the Nevada State Optometric Association and
the Northern Nevada Optometric Society. In 1997, he was recognized
as the Nevada Optometrist of the year. Dr. Devries provides lectures
for continuing education on a variety of ophthalmic topics and is
an Associate Clinical Professor at Pacific University College of
Optometry. As co-founder of Advanced Vision & Laser Center,
his practice is limited to medical/surgical optometry.
Convenience and Comfort
Advanced
Vision & Laser Center was also designed with patient convenience
and comfort in mind. The experienced and friendly staff encourages
tours, so that patients can familiarize themselves with the surroundings
beforehand. Pre-operative waiting rooms where patients watch television
while relaxing on plush recliners look more like cozy dens than
hospital waiting rooms. Family members or friends are invited to
watch the surgery on closed-circuit television monitors from the
observation room while staff members explain the procedure and answer
questions. Patients are welcome to visit AVLC on any surgery day
to witness the procedure live.
Vision Correction Procedures
Procedures performed include LASIK (Laser In-Situ Keratomileusis)
for patients with nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism,
PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy), laser, surface ablation, and lens implant surgery. These
procedures normally take less than thirty minutes and are performed
on an outpatient basis using an "eye drop" anesthetic to
numb the eye. Patients can usually return to their normal lifestyle
quickly with few restrictions during the post-operative period.
After having LASIK surgery, the vast majority of patients can
drive themselves to their check up the next morning.
